The Wisdom Behind Mentioning Rukū‘ and Sujūd Together

📌 قول الله تعالى: {وعهدنا إلى إبراهيم وإسماعيل أن طهرا بيتي للطائفين والعاكفين والركع السجود}

💡 خص الركوع والسجود بالذكر من جميع أحوال المصلي لأنهما أقرب أحواله إلى الله، وترك حرف العطف بينهما لتقاربهما ذاتا وزمانا؛ ولأن المقصود بهما المصلون، فناسب أن لا يعطف؛ لئلا يتوهم أن كل واحد منهما عبادة على حيالها، وهذا بخلاف (الطائفين والعاكفين) فقد ناسب معهما العطف لفرط التباين بينهما..

{And [mention] when We made the House a place of return for the people and [a place of] security, and [We said], “Take, [O believers], from the standing place of Abraham a place of prayer.” And We charged Abraham and Ishmael, [saying], “Purify My House for those who perform Tawaf (circumambulation), those who stay for worship, and those who bow and prostrate [in prayer].”

(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:125)

💡 Reflection:

Bowing (ruku‘) and prostration (sujood) are specifically mentioned among all the states of the praying person because they are the states in which the servant is closest to Allah. The conjunction (the word “and”) is omitted between them due to their closeness in nature and timing. Also, because both refer to the same category of people—the worshippers—it was appropriate not to use the conjunction, so that one does not think that each is a separate, independent act of worship.

This is in contrast to those who perform Tawaf and those who remain in devotion (‘akifin), where the conjunction “and” is used because of the great difference between the two acts.
